Building on History: Why Foundations Matter
Simplifying the Legacy: The ACC Coaching Approach
Building on the Layers of the Past
Walking through Canterbury; you can see the layers of the past everywhere you look. It reminds me of the people I coach. We all have these old 'layers'—old habits; old ways of thinking—that we try to build our new lives on top of. Sometimes you have to look at those old stones to understand why your new building is tilting. In 10 years of clinical observation; I’ve seen people try to ignore their foundations; only to have the whole structure collapse later.
Making things simple doesn't mean ignoring the history; it means understanding it so you can build something better. When I walked through this city; I saw that the ancient cathedrals weren't just buildings; they were scripts written in stone. You are writing your own script in stone every day. Every decision you make is either a solid foundation or a layer that will eventually need to be cleared away.
Finding Clarity in the Ruins
Walking through the streets of Canterbury; you are literally walking through time. You can see where the Roman foundations end and the medieval walls begin; and it’s a perfect metaphor for the human experience. In my ten years as a coach; I’ve found that most of us are trying to build a modern life on top of old; unexamined foundations. We have these 'Archaic Layers' of our identity that we haven't looked at in years; yet we wonder why our current structure feels unstable. Canterbury teaches us that you don't have to tear down the past to build the future; but you do have to acknowledge it.
The 10-Year Lesson in Structural Integrity
A decade of clinical observation has taught me that the people who find the most success are those who treat their life like a historical restoration. They don't just 'pivot' blindly; they carefully examine what parts of their foundation are still solid and what parts need to be reinforced. To make complex things simple: you are the architect of your own history. Every choice you made years ago is a stone in your current building. By walking through these historical spaces; I am reminded that the structures that last are the ones built with intentionality and a deep respect for the layers beneath.
